for Social Responsibility
Chesapeake Physicians for Social Responsibility (CPSR) is a Maryland-based organization dedicated to addressing urgent challenges that pose existential threats to our planet and humanity. With over 900 members throughout the state, our unwavering commitment is centered around tackling the pressing issues of the climate crisis and working for the abolition of nuclear weapons. These challenges are intricately interconnected with other concerns, including policy and action in major economic sectors including energy, transportation, and building, as well as pollution, social determinants of health, and the pursuit of health equity and environmental, social, and racial justice.
CPSR strives to create a sustainable future for all by engaging present and future health care professionals and others in advocacy, policy development and implementation, education, and community involvement. We invite you to participate in these vital efforts. It’s only by working together that we can make a meaningful impact and safeguard the future for generations to come.
81st Anniversaries of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings
On the 81st anniversaries of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, we honored the victims and learned how we can take action so the horrors of those two days are never again repeated.
First, we bannered to urge Johns Hopkins University to renounce research on the Sentinel land-based nuclear missile. Then, we heard about five examples of local resistance to nuclear weapons from 1988 to the present, told by people who were there.
A few days later, we watched a documentary about Daniel Ellsberg, the nuclear weapons whistleblower, and listened to a Johns Hopkins PhD student discuss their findings on the university’s involvement in military research.
We were glad to work on this event with our wonderful co-sponsors, including Prevent Nuclear War Maryland, Baltimore Nonviolence Center, Homewood Friends Meeting, and Maryland Peace Action.
